I'm Scott Garber.

Venture Capitalist

Mickey and Minnie. Cookies and Cream. Venture investing with a value investor mindset.

Venture capital seems to come in one flavor - IPO, or bust. While the VC world is not Baskin Robbins, it does come in other very different flavors. 3-8x (fast) exits, low failure rates (less than 15%), and smaller (sub $100m exits) work. I'm here to change the narrative, and the lives of underdog founders.

About Me Scott Garber

My Background

I have always been an entrepreneur at heart – from beanie babies and Pokemon “businesses” in high school to starting two actual technology startups after college. Since my ventures, I have co-led corporate strategy and M&A at Serco and served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at AARP. Additionally, I have had a CIA (full scope and lifestyle poly) clearance since age 20 - serving in a variety of roles within the HUMINT side of the IC. I have been an active angel investor in 50+ companies (5.1x realized multiple/61% realized IRR), and I currently run Early Light Ventures (2 pre-seed/seed funds with a spun out syndicate).

Early Life
Passions
Today

As a kid, we often daydream, and play in different professions. I was a cashier, baseball player, and even a member of the special forces (using Nerf guns). However, the most common profession followed a childhood passion (sports), and a less common dream…being a sportscaster.

This sportscaster dream was especially odd - after all, I often mumbled as a kid. In fact, I spent as much time in speech therapy, as I did in sportscasting dream land. While actually becoming a sportscaster was improbable, playing a venture capitalist was completely off my radar.

Shark Tank did not exist, venture capital was a murky niche, and startups were not part of popular culture. Although I thought I was a hotshot 12-year old with a beanie babies website, and a 13-year old with a Pokemon website, I was still just a kid. And after my first brushes with actual venture capitalists in college, I never fully identified with the “boom or bust” mentality. I always felt like there had to be a better way - for both investors, and founders.

Everyone dreams of doing something special with their lives - some are lucky enough to find their passion, and some are even luckier to live it everyday. Although I didn’t find my real passion as a little kid, I did find it as a young adult. And best of all, I can write my own script - as a “value” investor in mostly first-time pre-seed and seed-stage founders. There is a major, untold story in venture capital - and an equally major opportunity to back hungry, chip on their shoulder founders in second tier cities.

I’ve been that first-time, passionate founder - and like to think that I still am at Early Light. There is nothing more rewarding than watching an underestimated founder efficiently build a real company - and drive a real exit. While their missions are often labeled as “boring”, and outcomes are often much smaller than an IPO, they also mean everything to these founders. After all, founding a company is often an improbable long-time dream for them. I’m lucky to spend everyday in something that still feels a bit like my own dream – even a very unexpected one. Although I’m not calling any sports games, I can now back the underdogs everyday - and help make their improbable dreams, undeniably real.

Scott has been a true partner from the first day we started working together. He combines an in-depth understanding of the enterprise software market with an extensive network of contacts from which he made meaningful introductions at every stage of our growth. He's always available to discuss strategy and be a valuable sounding board for the leadership team.

If I ever start a company again, Scott would be the first outside investor I'd let in -- even if I didn't need the money. Scott is the definition of founder friendly. He's got a wide array of market context for helping founders benchmark and understand situations. He's incredibly approachable and willing to help with anything, he'll provide blunt / honest feedback, but he's not invasive, dictatorial, or prescriptive.

I always heard when you find the right investor, all roadblocks become endless opportunities, and that is Scott Garber, the land of opportunity. Scott was personally hand in hand with us from day one. In less than a year of knowing Scott, he has made me a better leader, more operationalized, and has had a huge hand in the success of our company without controlling it; it is always a partnership. It is always safe and it is always an opportunity with him. He has amazing connections for a reason: because they trust him. And I trust him.

Scott's rolodex is unmatched and his ability to navigate the right partner, the right thesis, and at the right stage helped us ensure we took the right capital. We are well-positioned for long-term success because of Scott. I would lay down in slow moving traffic for Scott. He is an advisor, a friend, a shoulder, an investor, and more. Simply put, I look forward to being an LP in Scott's fund after our exit.

Scott (Early Light) led our seed round, and was very transparent from start to finish, including delivering on everything he said he'd do. Scott is what I would call a "founder friendly" investor by which I mean, he shows a great amount of respect for a founder's valuable time, and is very aligned in finding mutually successful outcomes. He is also very well connected and respected in the investment community. In fact, we had so many interested investors from his network, that our entire round was oversubscribed in weeks.

Connections, connections and connections. Scott’s rolodex is amazing. He connected us with other investors as well as our fractional CFO for example. No other investor in our company has worked as hard as Scott in connecting us to other firms and people that can help, not even close. As a board member, Scott took the time to learn our business and understand it, and not just superficially. Others take a glance from 30,000 feet and want to tell you everything right or wrong with your strategy, approach etc. Not Scott, he dug in and learned about us, the space, the competition and our client use cases and his guidance.

Scott is a diligent, passionate, tireless investor. He offers the connectivity to an incredible network of business operators and investors from all walks of life. Scott is the opposite of an ivory tower-type leader; instead, he values the ability to get in the trenches with you and figure out how to go from 0 to 1 through a mix of both creativity and process. He is big on principle - and doing things in the right way at the right time for entrepreneurs.

Three things distinguish Scott as an investor compared to others I've interacted with: (1) When Scott makes an introduction, people reply within minutes. I’ve never seen that degree of responsiveness and genuine willingness to connect from a warm intro – ever. (2) Scott is available to speak at any hour. There’s never an email, phone call or text that goes unnoticed. He stands behind his entrepreneurs and offers soundboarding and guidance at any time. (3) If you ever need a data-driven, emotion- removed perspective, Scott will deliver that.

Scott is the rare investor who delivers meaningful advice and exceptionally good intros. He connected us to the CEO of a key potential partner who is fresh off of a $150M funding round. Just imagine how full that guy's inbox is - and Scott got us to the front of the line! Scott is an investor that any entrepreneur would be lucky to have on his team.

From day negative one, Scott has acted as a key resource for our early stage growth. We ve gone to Scott for fundraising strategy, hiring tips and quick opinions on decision points large and small. Hes gone out of his way to make intros, update us on the market, and celebrate our successes. Scott is no fluff and candid. Hes also extremely tactical having been through this before as a founder.

Scott is the epitome of an invaluable early stage/angel investor. From the moment we met he has opened his seemingly endless rolodex to make useful introductions – to other investors, strategic partners, and potential customers – and is always available for an ad hoc strategy session or in-person meeting when I’m in his area.

Scott is someone you want on your team, not only able to make well-timed introductions to his vast network - through which we found our COO - but willing to roll up his sleeves with you in the trenches to make sure you have the best chance of succeeding. He’s a founder’s investor, having lived the entrepreneur’s journey as well.

testimonial 15

As a startup founder, especially when you're getting started, you are often unsure what you are looking for in an investor. In Scott, you have someone that is quick to assess, give feedback, respond (at any hour), and just be on your side. He not only makes introductions to his large network, but actively listens to provide feedback and help you see around corners then connect you with the right people, whether that's for investment or just advice. And when Scott makes introductions, people respond because everyone trusts and respects his opinion.

Scott has approached every interaction with me with a mindset of being helpful and supportive. He keeps track of the market pulse for each portfolio company, which is extremely helpful for giving founders advice on how/when to raise. You can be open with him about the challenges in your business, and he'll find ways to encourage and support you. He's able to strike the right balance between offering helpful advice without telling the founder what to do. I feel very lucky to have him as an investor.

Eric Gastfriend

testimonial 11

He's a great angel investor because he can sniff out bullshit, but is savvy enough to ask the right question to really weigh in if an early stage company has what it takes to get to the next stage. If you work with Scott - the check size is not going to matter as much as his ability to direct opportunities your way to grow your company, and the fact that he is a gate keeper investor. He’s smart money and as a founder, I’d recommend getting to know Scott because you’ll learn a lot.

Josh Anton

Deep network, thoughtful advisor, and sharp operator. Scott’s network and guidance lead us directly to our Lead Investor in our follow on round of financing. He is a major value add for any entrepreneur. He understands where and how to be helpful, particularly at the earliest stages of a company’s lifecycle. All investors promise they can be helpful, but Scott actually follows through, which is rare.
